File Under: Sports Ramblings
This will be one of my rare mainstream sports blogs here. But don't you worry; once the Tour starts, I'll be much more animated on the "sports" scene.
I do not consider myself an NBA fan. Heck; I don't even really like basketball period. Sure; I've done March Madness tournaments, etc, etc.. but its always been more for the gambling experience than the basketball.
Well, for some strange reason I found myself rather interested in the NBA playoffs this year. Perhaps I am entertained by the enigma that is "Shaq".. I mean, any man who never speaks in coherent sentences yet calls him self "The Big Aristotle" has got to be entertaining. Mark Cuban always kicks it up a notch. Dwayne Wade is phenomenal. Dirk Nowitzki (I mean, can you get a cooler name?), Avery Johnson, Pat -the rat- Riley, 'Toine, "The Glove"...
Now, I've watched about 4 games (which believe me... is ALOT) and was relatively entertained (of course, with the exception of that debacle that was game 5). For some reason; while I identify with the Mav's in their attitude, the make up of personalities, their owner, I really wanted the Heat to win. I guess I'm a sucker for good players who have never won championships before (for some reason or another); this team had a few of those guys. I still root for Antoine Walker (even those he's probably the MOST frustrating player to watch), Alonzo Mourning hobbling around with one kidney (you gotta root for the miracles of modern medicine), Gary Payton limping around (only because he looks like he's going to strangle someone after the game), Shaq (do I need a reason?), and Wade; mostly because he's awesome. Jordan; No, Damn Good; Yes. It will be interesting to see the battle next season now that Wade is the first dominant player and "superstar" from the 2003 draft (to qualify; I know Darko won a ring with the Pistons, but riding the pine to a championship doesn't count.. otherwise I would assume that Drew Bledsoe would have a "real" ring) to win a championship and the debate that brings up (i.e. Wade better than LeBron). Although people need to remember that LeBron doesn't have Shaq.... But I suppose this is a blog for next season. Or if the media goes crazy... although that is very likely to happen.
So with that said, congrats to the Miami Heat.

Yeah, props to Employee #8. Hell of a 3rd quarter last night.
ReplyDeleteIs Wade better than LeBron? Bron is more talented overall. Wade has a much better killer instinct. Some of the disparity is probably due to the fact that Wade is older and played in college. And yes, the Heat have a much better supporting cast.
LeBron is a different type of player than we've ever seen before. When that type of player comes along, there is usually a lag where the GM/Coaching staff has to figure out the proper way to build a team around him. Jordan didn't win till his 7th season. Barkley never won. Bron is good enough to overcome a lot of that, but he's got a long ways to go.
That said, the next 5-10 years should be pretty sweet.
check out simmons column today.
ReplyDeletehe's alrady touting wade.
