NCAA

So, with seeing all the hubub about the NCAA tournament, I thought that I would share my two cents (especially since its already been done here).

This year I made a concious decision to boycott filling out a bracket and participating in the "March Madness" if you will.

I guess this goes along with the relative lack-lustre feeling I've had about sports for about the last 6 months or so. Part of it has to do with my being busier with other things (i.e. music) but after listening to WEEI a few months ago, I heard a commercial that totally turned me off, and have pretty much boycotted sports radio and sports stuff in general since.

Although, I have to admit; I still regularly read bill simmons... damn you bill simmons!

  1. Just about every year I decide "I'm not filling out a bracket this year" - mostly because I would rather just enjoy the games and root for chaos. And every Wednesday before games start I cave and fill one out. So no harm in boycotting that.

It's ironic that Boston, for being one of the best sports towns in the world has a ridicilously oppressive atmosphere for being a fan. It's no coincidence that I'm more into the Sox + Pats when I'm living more out of town. I get to tune out all the reactionary bullshit and just be a fan on my own time. I love sports. But I don't watch ESPN, and 75% of the time, when I'm watching a game at home, I'm listening to music, and not the announcers. The general American sports fan sucks.

That's who WEEI and other sports radio shows in Boston cater to. EEI is the craziest bastion of conservative talk radio. It amazes me that the hosts and callers live in Boston. It's just another case of the fringe minority being vocal and controlling the image of public opinion. They don't speak for me. And sports reporting has become sensationalist media. Controversy gets people talking. If you don't have a new controversy, you have to state the old ones MUCH LOUDER...

As a kid, I listened to sports talk, because it was fascinating and new. Then I listened because I was hooked on hearing information when it happened. Now the internet does that. Before I left Boston, I would listen in the morning, because it was guaranteed to piss me off and make me get out of bed when I couldn't stand it any more. Now I just don't care.

Hate the reporter, not the game, playa.
