File Under : Side Effects
Know what I got for my birthday this year? Stomach Virus. Awesome. Plus it's been like a hundred fucking degrees out. Also awesome. Diet pills got nothing on that. Vitamin water (first discovered by the Jug Band in Seattle c.2003) is saving my ass. No caffeine + No alcohol + No (fun) drugs + No food = No Energy.
Portland seems to have convinced itself that it is, in fact San Francisco. At least as far as climate is concerned. "Oh, it never snows/gets hot in the city" Bullshit. It does this every year. But there's no air conditioning. And the next time it snows, you'll swear you're in Atlanta the way the place shuts down. Get over yourself.
Bands can start booking in size appropriate venues here any time they want. Now every show either sells out or is 80% empty o is at the Crystal Ballroom and sucks by default.
My illness week has yielded more opportunities to watch soccer. So that's a plus. I'll agree that the Ecuador-England game sucked, but Beckham's goal was a thing of beauty. (2nd only to Maxi Rodriquez' winner against Mexico. Damn!) Argentina's coach made the mistake today that every coach seems to be making - not playing the dynamic young player during crunch time. Sometimes, you got to believe. Still on pace for Germany-Brazil though, so I got that going for me.
For an NBA Draft that was agreed to have no discernable talent, Wednesday's was about as exciting of a three-hour stretch as you can get. Tough to judge the C's when they appear to be posturing for a big time trade, but here are some thoughts...
Was this the absolute best talent yield they could have obtained? Possibly not. Did all the moves upgrade the club? Absolutely.
Instead of Dan Dickau and Orien Greene, we now have Rajon Rondo and Sebastian Telfair. Check and Check. Bassy's got some issues, for sure. But he's got IT. Worth the shot. Ainge seems to want a certain type of PG, he's the mold, just needs to work on the shot a bit more. With the right cast around him, he'll develop. NBA point is the toughest job to learn outside NFL QB.
Raef for 3 years vs Theo Ratliff for 2 years? Check. Raef was great to have the twice a month he got in a groove and was draining threes. The other 10 games? Eh.
If Leon Powe's knees hold up, he'll be an All-Star. No question in my mind. He's the shit. Great pick in the 2nd round.
Iverson? Probably deserves his own entry. So I'll do that. Soon.
If the Red Sox were in the National League, they'd break all records known to man. But then, the Royals would be a playoff team in the NL, so whatever. And Papi would have to play 1st more often. Youk is awesome.
I was excited about the TdF this year - the strategy would be much more exciting than "Everyone against Lance" the way it has been the last few years. Now? Not.
I've earned a beer.
